The series Artemis Fowl is great for reluctant tween readers (especially boys). It is set in Ireland, where a boy-genius named Artemis plots to kidnap a fairy and get a ransom in gold for returning it. Things don't go quite as he expected, though, because the fairy world is not the glittering, rainbow forest that humans think. In fact, they live underground and their technology is far more advanced than our own. When one of the fairy officers goes missing, the higher ups are none too pleased with the human who took her.
Artemis begins as a very selfish, clever boy, but as the series continues his character slowly develops. Another great aspect to the story is that it promotes being intelligent and brave. The richly developed secondary characters add a lot of humor, which meshes well with the technology aspect. The series really holds itself to a high standard, and each book is just as good as the first. Colfer has a really unique style and voice.
